Companiio helps you find things to do around Metro Vancouver and plan a day out. This policy explains what we collect, why, who we share it with, and how to get rid of it. Questions? Email contact@companiio.com.
- We collect what the app needs to work: your account, your preferences, roughly where you are, and how you use the app.
- We do not sell your data. We do not share it with advertisers. We do not track you across other apps or websites, and the app contains no advertising SDK.
- Your data is stored in Canada.
- You can delete your account and everything attached to it from inside the app, permanently.
1. What we collect
Account information
When you create an account we collect your email address, and your first name if you give one. If you sign in with Apple or Google, we receive your email address from them — if you use Sign in with Apple's "Hide My Email", we only ever see the private relay address. If you set a profile picture, we store that photo.
You can use most of Companiio without an account, as a guest.
Your preferences
What you tell us during onboarding and in Settings: interests, cuisines, budget band, energy level, transport modes, travel radius, dietary preferences, and accessibility needs.
Dietary and accessibility preferences can be sensitive — accessibility needs describe a disability, and a dietary preference such as halal can imply a religious belief. We collect them only because you chose to enter them, we use them only to filter and rank suggestions so the app does not recommend places that do not work for you, and we never share them with anyone.
Location
Only if you allow it, and only while you are using the app. We never request background location.
- For the feed, weather, air quality and distances, your location is rounded to about 1.1 km before it is used or stored. We do not keep a history of where you have been.
- If you ask for directions from your location, we send a coordinate rounded to about 110 m to Google's Routes API to calculate that route. It is used for that request and not stored. Directions between two places (for example from a venue to its parking lot) do not use your location at all.
You can turn location off in Settings, or refuse the permission — the app still works and defaults to Vancouver.
How you use the app
Which screens you open, what you search for (including the words you type in search), what you view, save, book, plan and share. We use this to rank suggestions for you and to understand which parts of the app people use.
Things you create
Saved places, generated day plans, journal entries, bookings and expedition progress.
Device and diagnostics
A device identifier, and a push notification token if you turn notifications on. If you leave diagnostics enabled, we collect crash reports and performance data so we can fix problems.
What we do not collect
We do not collect payment information, financial information, health data, your contacts, your browsing history, or precise background location. Companiio is free and has no in-app purchases.
2. Why we use it
| Purpose | What it uses |
|---|---|
| Run the app — sign you in, save your plans, show what's nearby | Account, preferences, location, things you create |
| Personalize suggestions | Preferences, usage, coarse location |
| Send notifications you asked for | Push token, preferences |
| Fix crashes and improve performance | Diagnostics |
| Understand which features are used | Usage analytics |
We do not use your data for advertising, and we do not make automated decisions with legal or similarly significant effects about you.
3. Who we share it with
We share data only with service providers who process it on our behalf:
| Provider | What they receive | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Google Firebase | Account, preferences, content, usage, diagnostics | Hosting, sign-in, storage, analytics, crash reporting |
| Google Maps Platform (Routes API) | A coordinate rounded to ~110 m, and the destination | Calculating in-app directions when you request them |
| Open-Meteo | Your ~1.1 km rounded coordinate | Weather forecast |
| Environment and Climate Change Canada | An area derived from your rounded coordinate | Air Quality Health Index |
| Expo | Your push token | Delivering notifications |
| Apple / Google | Sign-in details you provide to them | Sign in with Apple / Google |
Venue and event links open the venue's own website inside the app. Those sites are not ours and their own privacy practices apply.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it with data brokers or advertising networks.
We may disclose information if the law requires it, or to protect our rights or someone's safety.
4. Where your data lives
Your data is stored in Google Cloud's Montreal region, in Canada. Some providers above may process data outside Canada; where that happens, it remains subject to this policy and to contractual protections.
5. How long we keep it
We keep your account data while your account exists. Diagnostics and analytics are retained on a rolling basis by the providers above. When you delete your account, deletion is immediate and permanent (see below).
6. Your choices and controls
Everything here is in Settings:
- Location precision and personalization — turn either off. With personalization off we stop using your activity to rank suggestions.
- Diagnostics — turn off crash and performance reporting. Turning it off also stops us associating analytics with your account and deletes unsent reports.
- Notifications — per-type toggles, plus your device's own settings.
- Clear activity history — wipes your recently viewed, searches and synced activity.
- Delete account & data — permanently deletes your account and everything attached to it: your profile, saved places, plans, journal, bookings, expeditions, notification tokens and your profile picture. This is immediate and cannot be undone, and it removes your sign-in credentials too.
You may also have rights under Canadian privacy law (PIPEDA) and, depending on where you live, other laws — including access to your data, correction, and complaint to a regulator. Email contact@companiio.com and we will respond.
7. Children
Companiio is not directed at children and we do not knowingly collect data from children under 13. If you believe a child has given us data, email us and we will delete it.
8. Security
Data is transmitted over HTTPS and stored in Google Cloud with access rules that restrict each account's data to that account. No system is perfectly secure, but we limit what we collect, round your location before we use it, and never store payment details.
9. Changes
If we change this policy we will update the date at the top and, for significant changes, tell you in the app.
